CSU vs CU 10/15/06

Colorado won the match at Colorado State tonight 20-13.

Colorado did their damage out wide with three try's on the edge,  a conversion and a drop goal from Maximo DeAchaval.
Colorado State played tough with one score on the wing and one from a break up the middle but weren't able to crack the Colorado goal line in the second half.

Four minutes in to the match and Colorado took it to Colorado state dominating scrums and rucks early leading to an overload try in the corner to put CU up by five.  CSU settled down and put on some of their own pressure when the spun a ball wide off of a lineout for a score through wing John Hackemer and tie the match up at 5-5.

Next it was CU's turn when they applied steady pressure to the CSU goal line and then after several minutes opted for the drop goal from inside center Maximo DeAchaval to go ahead 8-5.

Colorodo State punched back with a break from inside center Justin Pauga who stuck the defending fullback and put open side flanker Nick Anderson through for the score.  To leave the halftime score 8-10.

CU would start the second half strong when CSU knocked on the kickoff, CU took advantage and crashed a few phases toward the center of the field and then spun it to the wing Tom Fitz with a strong run and score.  Fitz would follow up again ten minutes later with another score to but CU up 20-10.
CU would hang on and hold off the comeback run from CSU only allowing a penalty kick to leave the final score 20-13.

CSU prop Dan Wonstolen said that "both teams fought hard and had their strengths but CU capitalized on a few missed tackles.  We saw some strengths and some areas to work on for our final two league games."

Colorado and Wyoming have secured playoff spots and now it is between Air Force and Colorado State to determine the final playoff spot.

Colorado State vs the University of Northern Colorado - 10/07/07

CSU matched up against the University of Northern Colorado in a non league friendly. State got the offense firing scoring six try’s but the defense slipped letting in six but winning 40-32 based on good kicking from freshman fly half Michael Garrity and a four try performance from inside center Andrew Anema. The B-side lost close and missed out on a good opportunity for a win loosing 17-26 to UNC after leading 17-14 at the half.

CSU started quick forcing a turnover through the forwards at midfield and spun the ball through the hands to freshman outside center Kevin Dombrock who cut back and scored under the posts. UNC came right back and scored off a lineout from 10 meters out. A coaching call could be blamed for the score as an opposed jump was called but UNC won the line and tapped down to a runner going through before our jumper was brought down putting UNC on the board 7-5.

Another pretty try was scored when hooker Jeff Odell took a crash off a short lineout within ten meters of the goal line, popped off the deck to open side flanker Nick Anderson who drew a man and fed inside center Andrew Anema for the try. UNC came back and dominated possession scoring two more long break unconverted try’s to go up 14-15. The teams traded scores with hooker Jeff Odell making another long run where the ball was quickly recycled and passed to inside center Andrew Anema for another try to put the score 21-20 at the break following a UNC try.

The back and forth scoring continued in the second half with Andrew Anema scoring again and prop Dan “Toothless” Wonstolen going over off a quick tap penalty to set the score 33-27. The go ahead try was scored by Andrew Anema after lock Cory Cranston chipped the ball ahead after a UNC droped ball, but UNC fought back to have the final score from their prop to end the game 40-32.

With six starters out due to injury and five freshman seeing playing time CSU did well to get the offense going and to get the win but a much better all around performance will be needed next week to defeat CU in a league match. With three of the injured players returning and a good hard weak of practice the team will gunning for rivals CU.

B-side

The CSU B-side played very well in the first half and played great defense in the second half but turned over possession whenever they managed to get it back and let the game slide away to loose 17-26.

In the first half Senior Reilly Madison led the charge from inside center scoring twice to put CSU up 10-0. UNC came back with two scores when open side flanker “Albino” Steve Keller charged down a kick and touched it down for a try to put the score 17-14 for CSU at the half.

The Rams fought hard in the second half and laid some hard hits but couldn’t get any offense going and gave up two unconverted try’s to UNC to end it on the wrong side of the score line 17-26.

All the new players have been improving and are starting to play smart as well as hard.

CSU vs Wyoming 9/23/07
The Colorado State Men’s Rugby team started the West conference league season off on the wrong foot loosing to the University of Wyoming 3-10.  Colorado State came in to the match ranked 22nd in the nation, with Wyoming ranked 13th.  In a scrappy game the Rams weren’t able to generate any sustained offensive pressure and untimely errors and turnovers ended many scoring opportunities.  Wyoming played a steady game of field position and ball control and were able to score two unconverted Try’s by exploiting offensive overloads after multiple phases.

In the first twenty minutes Wyoming pressured the CSU line but the Rams defense held steady and prevented an early score.  Play continued at midfield with each team poaching well off isolated runners.  Wyoming then drove forty meters to the Rams 10m with their forwards on successive runs drawing in the defense and creating a huge overload.  Only two backs lined up against five from Wyoming and even with poor passing Wyoming was able to convert the overload in to the games first score to go up 0-5.

CSU came back and pressured hard for the rest of the half.  Knocking the ball on at the goal line on one opportunity and breaking several runs that didn’t quite make it to the goal line before being turned over due to a lack of support and good defense from Wyoming.  The Rams did get on the board with an impressive drop goal from flyhalf Thomas Staab to set the halftime score 3-5.

In the second half Wyoming continued to dominate field position and possession.  The Rams were able to break the Wyoming line when they had the ball with good runs from inside center Justin Pauga and good support running from flanker and 8-man Nick Anderson and Logan Collins.  CSU had two of its own overloads but made the wrong decision and drove the ball up rather than passing it through the hands.

Wyoming scored to go up by 7 points at the 70th minute.  Wyoming ran about 12 phases in a row at the Ram 30 meter line loosing yardage and running with single runners but managing to maintain possession when they outflanked the Ram defense and the Wyoming flyhalf looped around to score in the corner.

CSU put in a good effort to come from behind but handling errors prevented a come back.  It was a tough day for CSU who have two weeks of non league matches to correct their problems before finishing the season with league matches against CU, Air Force and New Mexico.

Elsewhere in league action CU came from behind at the last minute to defeat Air Force 36-35.
