CSU vs Wyoming 10/26/08 Game Summary

A-side
Colorado State started the match slow with poor tackling and costly mistakes in their own end.

Four minutes in to the match CSU kicked to the Wyo winger who threw a dummy pass, tricking no less than five CSU defenders and then sprinted down the sidelines to open the scoring with Wyo going up 0-5.

Wyo’s next score was well deserved from hard work from their forward picking and driving to score to go up 0-12.

Wyo’s second score came twelve minutes in and was well deserved as the Wyo #8 picked from a scrum ten meters out and beat both our flanker and wing to score to go up 0-12.

Fly half Thomas Staab got CSU on the board with a penalty kick to tighten the score 3-12 sixteen minutes in to the match.

Wyo would score twice more off the same CSU error when not one but two lineouts from the CSU five meter line were tapped back off the top rather than caught, with a Wyo player hustling and diving on the loose ball for a score.

CSU started to work some offense against the strong wind and fly half Thomas Staab fed inside center Justin Puaga who trucked three Wyo players and went in for the score.

Wyo’s last score came twenty seven minutes in and was well deserved as the Wyo #8 picked from a scrum ten meters out and beat both our flanker and wing to score to go up 10-29.

CSU would play with the wind at their back and downhill in the second half but were unable to complete the come back against the stout Wyoming defense.

Second half scores came from fly half Thomas Staab and outside center Andrew Anema to leave the game at a close loss 24-29. CSU earned the bonus point for the close loss and moved in to second place in the standings avoiding an extra road trip in the spring and automatically qualifying for the West Championships.

Man of the match went to #10 Thomas Staab after an excellent game on attack and defense.

B&C-side
The B&C sides played three good halves against the big Wyoming B-side and executed Ram Rugby.

The game featured good team ball and also highlighted good one on one athleticism from some promising young rugby players.

CSU dominated the first half of play with scores from freshman tight head prop Ryan Remaley, sophomore outside center Irish Pat Kobilca and a penalty kick from sophomore scrum half Kyle Lunsford to end the half up 17-0.

Against the wind CSU didn’t have as much luck and gave up three scores to Wyo with the last a disappointing defensive effort at the end of the half when a lone Wyo player kicked in to the end zone and then out ran several CSU players despite starting 20 yards further away from the ball to score the try. The second period ended tied 17 all.

CSU regrouped and put in three scores to end the match 32-17 with two try’s from freshman center Stephen Vigil and one from freshman wing Greg Larder.

Man of the match was junior fly half Mark Fischer who directed the game well.

 CSU vs UNM 10/12/08

CSU vs UNM 10/12/08

Colorado State ranked #13 in the nation came out firing on all cylinders for their second league match against the #23 ranked University of New Mexico. State won the match by a score of 51-7.

The B-side also performed well avenging a previous loss to the University of Northern Colorado B-side with a 27-7 win.

The league results for Colorado State will come down to the final two league matches with #9 Air Force this Sunday October 19th at noon at the Air Force Academy and the following Sunday October 26th at noon at #7 ranked Wyoming.

With inspirational senior leader Logan Collins, president, game day captain and All American going out for the season after a broken cheek bone requiring surgery it is up to the team to finish off the season and qualify for the spring playoffs so that he has something to come back for in the spring.

Due to early season success Colorado State climbs the two national rankings moving up to #12 on the eRugbyNews rankings (subscription required) and #19 on the AmericanRugbyNews rankings.

A-side Game Summary
Early pressure and great team play led to four scores in the first twenty minutes. The following twenty minutes consisted of back and forth play with no score until CSU finished off the half with a penalty kick and converted try at the 38th and 40th minute of the half to go in to the break up 36-0.

The team kept up the pressure and continued to spread the field and play tough defense to score two more try’s and a penalty kick. Unfortunately CSU lost the shutout at the 70th minute of the game when UNM continued playing hard the whole game and scored off a long kick, where the pressured our wing and fullback, forced a turnover and earned a well deserved try. The final score ended up 51-7 in a tough chipy match dominated by CSU on a day when passes were going to hand and things were working out.

The team had seven different players score on the day and two penalties and 5 conversions kicked by senior fly half Thomas Staab. The try scorers were 5th year senior inside center Justin Pauga, junior scrum half Andrew “Chicago” Bauer, 5th year senior Nick “The Brick” Anderson, sophomore wing John Hackemer, 5th year senior outside center Andrew Anema, and man of the match senior lock Cole Hanson. From this score line you can see it was a good team effort during the match.

B-side Game Summary
The B-side avenged a loss to UNC B earlier in the season with a big 27-7 win.

At the start of the game both teams were really competing hard at the breakdown. After 15 minutes of scrappy rugby and hard rucking the CSU forwards started to take control and supplied good ball to the backs.

The first score came after a long break by the backs that was stopped just short of the try line by UNC. The forwards picked and jammed a couple of times and then sophomore scrum half Kyle Lunsford went weak off a ruck to score an unconverted try to go up 5-0 15 minutes in to the game.

The team continued to play well and got the ball wide to freshman wing Drew Grigsby for two unconverted try’s off of good skip passes from sophomore fly half Mikey Garrity and sophomore outside center “Irish” Pat Kobilca. CSU went in to the half up 15-0.

UNC came back in the second half strong and scored the first try to bring the score to 15-7 and looked to make a comeback. CSU regrouped and scored two more try’s to finish the game. Rookie rugby player senior flanker Brandon Owens scored after a hard driving run up the middle and sophomore fullback Matt Richardson streaked the sideline for a 70 meter try.

Man of the match was awarded to freshman inside center Stephen Vigil but the day was one with a solid team effort. CSU subbed in almost a full new backline in the second half along with several forwards without a drop off in the quality of play. Unfortunately sophomore scrum half Marc Mendes fractured his wrist but will only be out for 2-3 weeks and hooker Matt O’brian sprained his ankle and will be out at least one week.

The B-side still has it’s sites set on winning the league championship and can still do so if they sweep the Air Force and Wyoming B-sides.

CSU vs CU and Early Season Summary

CSU defeats CU 34-12.

In CSU’s last match the team defeated the #4 ranked CU in convincing fashion. It was a good team effort with the team up 34-0 before a letdown in the last ten minutes when CU scored twice.

The CSU Rugby team has completed the pre-season portion of the season and is now set to face in state rival CU in their first league match this Sunday at 1PM on their home turf.
Make plans to head out to the match, Click here for Directions

CSU will be looking for a big upset of in state rivals Colorado this Sunday as CU is currently ranked 4th and 8th in the nation in the two collegiate top 25's.

The A-side is now 3-2 on the season and the B-side is 1-2-1. The teams are looking good and we have decent depth this year and we've needed it with quite a few players going down to small injuries at the beginning of the year.

Quick Recap of the Season So Far

Alumni Match
A-side Win 49-14 vs the Alumni, B-side Win 28-14 vs the Alumni/C-side

The alumni match was a good event with many young alumni showing up to play and putting together a good alumni squad. The current team showed well and exploited the fitness of the alumni team to get a few scores on the board. The alumni did well scoring two tries and showing team experience and savvy. Everyone enjoyed pizza singing and match awards at the alumni banquet held at the C.B. & Potts clubhouse.

The alumni are organizing to improve their support of the team, contact Harley Westfall (517) 902-7371 if interested in helping lead the alumni organization. Make plans now to attend the Alumni weekend in 2009 on Labor Day weekend and the 40th anniversary alumni weekend in 2010.

2nd Match vs the Univ. of Northern Colorado
A-side Win 29-12, B-side Loss 6-17

The team started the match great moving the ball well and capitalizing on UNC mistakes. After the quick start UNC stepped up there play, we cooled down and UNC pounded well with their big pack. Late in the second half the backs started to find gaps and put in a few more tries. Scores went to #11 Drew Batty, #8 Logan Collins, #13 Craig Sherman and two tries for #10 Thomas Staab.

The B-side played well and dominated the match in the second half but played greedy at the goal line and failed to score a try even though they spent the majority of the second half inside the UNC 22 meter zone. #10 Kyle Lunsford kicked two penalty goals.

Jackalope Tournament
A-side Loss 6-12 to Wyoming, Loss 5-14 vs Air Force, and Won 33-7 against Nebraska.
B-side Loss 0-17 to Wyoming b, Loss 5-19 vs Mesa State, Tie 17-17 vs the Univ of Colorado

Both the A&B sides played well for periods at the Jackalope tournament but also played poorly. Overall the results were below the team's standards and it was clear the team needed to work on scrumaging, clearance kicks and running hard and strait. Many players stepped up and performed well creating good competition for starting spots.
